wa Josephine Craven Powell was the oldest daughter of “Big Daddy and Big Momma”. She was born on October 23, 1914.
Josephine Powell had the following information written in her obituary:
“Josephine Craven Powell, age 89, of Minneapolis departed this life on September 24, 2004. The oldest of 10 children was born October 23, 1914 in Jonesville, LA to the late Fred Sr and Millie Craven. Josephine moved to Minneapolis in the mid 1940’s. The famous retailer Donaldson Department Store employed her for several years. Josephine married her late husband, Julius Powell, in 1954. They were longtime residents of South Minneapolis. Josephine united the Sabathani (now Greater Friendship) Baptist church under the leadership of Reverend Terry. She later joined the Macedonia Baptist Church now under the leadership of Reverend William A. Watson III. She regularly attended and participated in church services until her health failed. Josephine is preceded in death by her parents, Fred Craven, S. and Millie Crave; six siblings and her dear husband, Julius Powell. She leaves to cherish her memory one brother, Fred Craven, Jr. Jonesville, LA: two sisters, Freddie Mae Holman, Seattle, WA and Mary Alice McKinnery, Las Vega, NV; a dear and beloved friend/caregiver, Lorraine Pittman, Minneapolis, MN; a devoted foster son, Woodrow (Mary) Cann, Jr., Minneapolis, MN; and a host of other family members and friends. Funeral service Monday, October 4, 11:00 am at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, 3355 4th Street North, Minneapolis. Visitation one hour prior to service. It was so awesome to find this wonderful obituary of Josephine published in the Star Tribute On October 3, 2004 (Page B8). What a testament of how loved she was and how important it was for those that cared about her the most for her story and history to be published with such a beautiful picture documenting her elegance and achievements.
