When Fannie Fagan was born in March 1880, her father, Rafe, was 25, and her mother, Josaphin, was 22. She gave birth to two sons and seven daughters with Cosgrove Sims Thomas. Fannie had three brothers and five sisters.

Fannie was described by her children to be loving, kind, attentive and encouraging. Lovingly referred to by later generations as Mama Fannie. Mama Fannie, cleaned homes professionally and raised incredible children.

Fannie married Cosgrove “Sims” Thomas. Fannie gave birth to their first child, Frank, at the age of 23. She also gave birth to Millie Thomas, Mary Thomas, Jesse Thomas, Essie Thomas, Josie Thomas, Bernice Thomas and Janessa “Janie” Thomas. Census records indicate that the couple also gave birth to a baby in 1920 that seems to have experienced an early death.

Fannie Fagan continued to reside in Jonesville, La until her death on October 30, 1977. As he aged, her husband “Sims” was cared for by theirĀ  children and he rotated between their homes to share care giving responsibilities. Sims died in Oakland, while in the home of their eldest daughter, Millie Thomas on April 17, 1987 at the age of 97.
